Wave UFO by Mariko Mori

Wave UFO (1999-2002) is Mori’s second large interactive
architectonic project and her most spectacular work
up to the present. It represents a synthesis between
the various ways of travelling: spatially, mentally, and
temporally. It is a wonderful hybrid object, twelve metres
long and five metres tall. All the important themes of
Mori’s work converge in this work, such as science,
spirituality, tradition, innovation, music, performance,
fact and fiction, present and past. The implementation of
the project required three years and the work is the result
of an enormous effort by a team of specialists.
The key concept of the Wave UFO is the idea of
‘unity’.
One of the most important elements of the Wave
UFO is that it translates ‘real time’ brainwaves into
a graphic program. It is based on the notion that
visualizing what goes on in our heads is the closest
we can get to ‘ourselves’.
