President Obama says his new budget request to increase NASA’s funding by billion over the next five years is an investment in America’s future, and a challenge to the agency to build on its legacy of innovation and discovery. “What we’re looking for is not just to continue on the same path”, said the President. “We want to leap into the future. We want major breakthroughs, transformative for NASA.” Making his remarks to an audience of several hundred at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida prior to the start of a one-day “Conference on the American Space Program” for the 21st Century”, President Obama reassured those in attendance about his support for NASA. “The bottom line is, nobody is more committed to manned spaceflight, the human exploration of space, than I am. But we cant do it the same old way, but in the smart way to get where we want to go.” The space conference of senior officials, space and industry leaders, academic experts and others focuses the different aspects of the President’s new direction for the agency. President Obama was introduced by NASA Administrator Charles Bolden. (Details at: www.nasa.gov)
Elon Musk may have made history today.
The video feed cut out after the second stage went through some harmonic oscillations. In any case, the first stage worked wonderfully, and the rocket made it to space.
Update: "We did have a roll-control anomaly," Musk says of the second stage. Fate of the rocket remains unknown. Elon says the rocket may have re-entered the atmosphere prior to reaching the intended orbit. The rolling motion caused the second stage engine to shut down early. (further updates in comments below)
The rocket uses dynamic thrust control to stabilize the flight without fins. After the cowlings fell away, it went into a roll.
Info from SpaceX on the Falcon milestones: The Falcon 1 rocket will begin its journey to orbit, accelerating to 17,000 mph (25 times the speed of sound) in less than ten minutes. Designed from the ground up by SpaceX, Falcon 1 is a two stage rocket powered by liquid oxygen and purified, rocket grade kerosene. On launch day, Falcon 1 will launch into the history books for several notable reasons:
• It will be the first privately developed, liquid fueled rocket to reach orbit and the world’s first all new orbital rocket in over a decade.
• The main engine of Falcon 1 (Merlin) will be the first all new American hydrocarbon engine for an orbital booster to be flown in forty years and only the second new American booster engine of any kind in twenty-five years.
• The Falcon 1 is the only rocket flying 21st century avionics, which require a small fraction of the power and mass of other systems.
• It will be the world’s only semi-reusable orbital rocket apart from the Shuttle.
• Most importantly, Falcon 1, priced at .7 million, will provide the lowest cost per flight to orbit of any launch vehicle in the world, despite receiving a design reliability rating equivalent to that of the best launch vehicles currently flying in the United States.

There is a problem with this picture. It’s not that I just spent a good amount of money on these sets. It’s not that Smash’n'grab has finally hit the shelves here in Germany. It’s not that the new wave of Space Police 3 sets has arrived. It’s not that I’m trying to collect all the SP3 sets.
The problem is this: WHERE THE FSCK IS THE RAID VPR SET?!? Still missing from the shelves here in Germany, and you can’t even order it on Lego’s website because it says "not available in Germany". Do I really have to get it through bricklink or ebay?
Oh well.
As you can see here we don’t even get the names of the sets. Only licensed sets show names here in Germany (Star Wars sets are labelled in English, even). So I only know the set with the purple ship is called "Smash’n'grab" because I read that here on flickr.
Ultra-short reviews:
Smash’n'grab: Yay for purple pieces and a trans-yellow windscreen. There are also a lot of yellow 1×1 technics bricks included, which will come in handy.
Undercover cruiser: The transformation works remarkably well, and the "weapons hidden" mode even looks good from the underside!
Lunar Limo: Whoa, this thing looks much longer in real life than on the box. The V8 engine looks gorgeous. Many useful pieces in cool colors.
Space Police Central: This set uses a couple of interesting techniques I wouldn’t have expected, such as the main building having a studs-sideways internal structure. Lots of playability, too.
All four are nice sets to buy, I’d say. Interesting fact: all the new sets came with a spare long black antenna. Makes me wonder whether Lego got complaints about those breaking a lot.
