“De Plume, Boss… De Plume!!!” – STS-131 Space Shuttle Discovery Night Launch

This shot was much much more relevant a year ago. But in celebration of Discovery’s final launch a few days ago, I’m posting this. (I was probably gonna post it soon anyway; after going through older pictures recently)

But it’s the plume after Discovery’s Night Launch on April 5, 2010. I almost didn’t even take this shot. After I finished shooting the launch, I grabbed my tripod and started to walk back inside. But I slowly started to see this form. And since my gear was somewhat ready, I just went ahead and quickly captured this moment. Very glad I did though.

Shuttle Carrier Aircraft Arrives at Kennedy Space Center (KSC-2012-2007) (explored)

The Shuttle Carrier Aircraft makes contact with the runway at the Shuttle Landing Facility at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The aircraft, known as an SCA, arrived at 5:35 p.m. EDT to prepare for shuttle Discovery’s ferry flight to the Washington Dulles International Airport in Sterling, Va., on April 17.

This SCA, designated NASA 905, is a modified Boeing 747 jet airliner, originally manufactured for commercial use. One of two SCAs employed over the course of the Space Shuttle Program, NASA 905 is assigned to the remaining ferry missions, delivering the shuttles to their permanent public display sites. NASA 911 was decommissioned at the NASA Dryden Flight Research Center in California in February.

Discovery will be placed on permanent public display in the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, Va.

For more information on the SCA, visit www.nasa.gov/centers/dryden/news/FactSheets/FS-013-DFRC.html.
