"Today I give thanks for the clarity of mind that comes from sitting in the stillness attuning to God. Sitting in the stillness I let peace filter through all of my concerns." - UCRS Daily Affirmation.
I found that Zen is little more than the art of living in the moment and experiencing it in depth. Since an individual already knows the answers to their life questions, they just have to look inside themselves for them. Guidance from others can be expected when needed but no one person or group can provide all the answers. People need to slow down and ignore the numerous information bytes that continually tell what is good for us. Layer by layer a person can peel the social conditioning away and see that they are a perfect and complete being who lacks nothing and is already connected to the Universal Spirit. Meditation/prayer is a good way of doing this and there is no right or wrong way of doing it.
There is a time and place to learn theory but the real tests comes in everyday living. Real life is the best teacher of them all. Since there is no benefit to shutting oneself from real life, one needs to drop the "sleep" of everyday living and become fully consciousness. To experience full consciousness one must relearn how to breathe, eat, walk, see, listen, talk and think.
I see too many people spending too much time dwelling in the past or worrying about what the future will bring. Either one brings a lot of fear, anger, anxiety and depression to an individual. What is missed out is being in the present moment and how life can be one of intense joy.
Retreats are a good thing. It's not a way of ignoring ones troubles but a retreat can be a way of taking ones inventory in a quiet safe place. Meditation can help one become more aware of who they are, how one has been conditioned, what motivations they have and what life experiences they have gone through.
One thing I found necessary is to have some form of a skeptical attitude. It means asking hard question when needed rather than succumbing to blind faith.
I found mindulness is a way of enjoying the process of doing the activity I do and find pleasure in the process of doing it.
