A rubber tree plantation in Malaysia. Ramu was a tapper in a rubber plantation in Malaysia. He was about twenty eight, married with two kids. He was an extremely handsome man with a physique to match. Needless to say, the ladies in the plantation all fell head over heels in love with him. Young unmarried girls as well as married women sighed as Ramu either walked or cycled past them. It was no secret that many of these women vied with one another for Ramu's favours. They practically threw themselves at him, and Ramu willingly satisfied their desires. All the younger women needed to do was arrange a rendezvous with him, but the older ladies who were also desperate for his favors had to pay Ramu for his services. Thus not only was Ramu having the time of his life, but he was also earning extra cash in the process. As expected, the men in the plantation hated Ramu's guts. They were never be sure if their own wives were not having affairs with him. They set traps many times for him, but he avoided them all with the cunning of a wolf. Ramu's long suffering wife knew all the time what was happening, but decided not to make an issue of this as the lives of two young children were at stake. As we shall see, Providence did eventually come to her aid.
In the procedure of tapping rubber trees, tappers go out early in the morning to tap the rubber trees. Each tapper is given a certain number of trees (called a task) to tap, which a skilled tapper can complete in two or three hours' time. The tapper then rests for about two hours, during which time the latex from the tapped trees flow into a glass or plastic cups that are attached to the trees by wires. After this resting period, the tappers then go from tree to tree and pour the latex collected in the cups into buckets which they bring along. Finally, the buckets are emptied into large drums placed by the roadside which are taken by tractor/trailer units to the factory. At the factory the latex is processed into various grades of rubber as required.
Ramu was resting one morning after completing his task. On this day, he did not as usual, rest near the roadside where he could talk to other resting tappers, but did so at the other end of the task, which bordered a secondary forest. After he had finished a cigarette, Ramu looked around while seated below one of the rubber trees. His attention was immediately riveted to the rubber tree which was next to the tree under which he was resting. This tree appeared larger than the other rubber trees; but what surprised and shocked Ramu was what appeared to be a door carved on the trunk of the tree. The door was complete with a door knob. Ramu got up and approached the tree. Gingerly, he caught the knob and turned it. It yielded. Full of surprise, he pushed the door slightly. The door opened, and Ramu could not believe what greeted his eyes. There in front of him was a paved road. In a daze, Ramu stepped inside. He walked along the road, which soon joined up with a larger road. He noticed that this larger road had street lamps( which were not lit at that time, as it was daylight ). There were houses on both side of this road- but they all seem unoccupied. Still in a trance, Ramu kept walking along the larger road. There were no people around, and neither were there any vehicles. He was the sole individual walking down the street. After he had walked for a while, he noticed a house that seemed to be occupied. It looked better than the other houses, and had flower plants planted round the side. Ramu walked towards it. He pushed the front door, which opened readily. Inside, he noticed a well furnished hall and a dining table laden with the choicest of foods. He sat at this table and ate his fill. As the house did not have any TV or radio, Ramu decided to rest on the sofa for a while. He soon fell asleep.
He woke up with a start. He found that the lamps in the house were now lit. He went to a window and saw that the street lamps were also lit. He also noticed that the food on the table had been replenished with different varieties of food. Ramu ate again, but fear was now creeping steadily into him.' What is this place?' He thought to himself, 'And why am I here?' As he was thinking of walking out and retracing his steps back to the plantation, he heard the front door open. A wave of fear swept over him. Thoughts of meeting fierce man eating demons flashed across his mind. He was pleasantly surprised however to see a most beautiful young woman walk toward him. She was the epitome of beauty, and Ramu was even more surprised when she called him by his name. ' Have you rested Ramu?' she said in the most beautiful voice Ramu had ever heard. ' I hope you found the food to your liking ', she continued. She sat next to Ramu and held his hands. A heavenly perfume emanated from her. Ramu became immediately smitten by this lady. Never in all his life had he seen such beauty and such a refined character. The lady told him that she was called Mala, and that she owned the kingdom in which he was in at present. She told him that she wanted a strong and capable man to be her partner in order to run the kingdom. 'Could you be my partner?' she asked Ramu in an alluring voice. Ramu agreed readily. All thoughts about his family and friends were far far away from him now. Mala soon led him to the bedroom which was furnished with a large and comfortable bed. The first time Ramu made love to Mala, he thanked his lucky stars for the experience. Not one of his numerous flings ever came close to this experience. Not only did she have the best body when compared to all the females he knew, she was also an expert in the art of love making. It seemed she knew all the poses of the Kama Sutra; and she was a willing teacher. They made love several times that night, each time being more satisfying than the last. Ramu then fell asleep, the most satisfied male in the whole country. When he awoke the next day, the position of the sun told him that it was about noon. There was fresh food on the table. Ramu feasted to his heart's content. This time he noted that there was a bottle of liquor as well. He drank up the contents of the whole bottle. He rested awhile and noted that the lights of the house and the street lamps came on automatically when it became dark. The door opened, and in walked Mala. She did not talk as much as on the first day, but seemed obsessed with dragging him into the bedroom. Once inside, she wasted no time in engaging in violent sex with him. She was rougher than the first day, and wanted to take the dominant role each time. She gave him very little time in between rounds, and became mildly irritated when he needed more time to rest. By the time it was morning and the lights went out automatically, Ramu was completely fatigued. He noted that Mala left as soon as the lights went out. Breakfast was ready on the table. He ate sparingly. He did not touch the wine that was on the table. Ramu resolved to escape from the place.
He waited a while just to see if the coast was clear, and then ventured into the street. He quickly retraced his steps to where he thought the smaller road was. To his great disappointment, he could not find the road. However, he never gave up trying. He walked this way and that trying to locate the road, till his feet hurt. The sun started to sink in the west and he realised that Mala would soon be home. He hurried back to her house which he located easily. He ate a hurried meal and waited for the dreaded moment when the door would open. It opened. In walked Mala looking not as beautiful as the first time Ramu saw her. She talked even less than the second day and practically dragged him into the bedroom. It was mayhem in the bedroom, with Mala exhibiting the strength of a professional wrestler. She wanted more this time, and screamed insults when Ramu wanted to rest a little more. She left again abruptly at daybreak.
Ramu waited for a short while after her departure before he hit the street. He retraced his steps again to where he thought the small road might be. The result was the same however. Try as he might, he could not find the road. For the first time he thought about his family. Tears streamed from his eyes as he thought about his loving wife, and how she put up with his antics. He wondered if he would ever see his wife and kids again. He also realised that Mala was an evil spirit obsessed with sex, and sought out men with loose morals for this purpose. The Tamils called this sort of spirit 'Mohini '(pronounced moh-he-nee). He also realised that without Divine intervention, he would be unable to find a way out of that place. Ramu sat down by the side of the street and began to pray. He asked God for forgiveness for all his past deeds and promised God that he would change his ways if rescued from that place. He cried his eyes out while he prayed. Then he noticed the sun sinking to the west. He got up, and with his hands still clasped in prayer, went to search for the road.
He found it easily this time, and rushed out of the tree. As he stepped out of the tree, he heard a voice call out his name in the distance. He recognized it immediately as the voice of his best friend. He hollered back with all his might. The voice called back and he replied. After a few more calls, his friend stood in front of him. Ramu rushed to him and grabbed him with an iron grip and sobbed bitterly on his shoulder. Soon other friends emerged. There was not a dry eye around. His friends had arranged a search party every evening after work since his disappearance. They got lucky on the fourth evening. His friends were surprised to find him at that spot as they had passed the same spot the three evenings before and had not seen him there. They notice that Ramu sported a four day old beard and stach.
When Ramu was taken home, he rushed into the prayer room and stayed there the whole night, giving thanks to God and vowing to change his ways. True to his word, Ramu was a changed man after this incident. He never looked at another woman, and he became the best husband and father in the plantation.
