Malaysia Tiger may have been family spirit. This story was told to me by my house help when I first joined the plantations about twenty five years ago. She was an honest straight forward Malay lady, and I have no reason to suspect that she was not telling the truth. She informed me that this particular incident occurred when she was just a little girl. This is how it happened.
Her father was a man of means and well respected in the kampong (village), they stayed in. Not only did her father have many head of cattle, but he also had a plantation of fruit trees and a few sundry shops. Despite his obvious wealth however, he had a kindly nature and would be one of the first in the village to offer help to any resident who fell on hard times. His popularity in the village however caused great resentment and jealousy among the other rich folk of the village, who though possessing wealth, were skinflints and tightwads. Hassan (for that was the name of my house help's father) was a devout Muslim. He never failed to pray five times a day and fasted during the month of Ramadan without fail. He attended all Friday prayers and took time to read the Koran everyday. He also possessed some other abilities as we shall see below.
Hassan decided one day that he would throw a grand feast for the whole village. He spared no cost to ensure that it would be a feast that the village would be talking about for many years to come. Tents were erected. Many buffaloes were slaughtered, and a live band was called from Kuala Lumpur. The ladies of the village pooled their resources to make many varieties of delicacies, and everyone discussed how the feast could be made a most memorable one. Not everyone was happy though. His enemies were seething with rage. They viewed Hassan's hosting of the feast with great suspicion. They discussed for hours every day on what Hassan was scheming at by throwing the feast. Some of them thought that he was gunning for the 'Ketua kamopng' (village head) post. Others thought that he might be aiming even higher-to be elected as the candidate for the ruling party for that district in the coming election. With each day's discussion, their hatred for Hassan grew by leaps and bounds. They finally decided on a diabolical plot to not only put a stop to Hassan's ambitions, whatever they were, but to see that he could not repeat this action again. They decided to poison him.
The feast was a grand success. Dignitaries who were invited from afar were impressed that such a lavish party could take place in a village. Hassan's enemies were also invited to the feast. They were unusually friendly and cooperative that day. They praised him to the skies, and told him that only he was capable of carrying out such a grand event. Hassan, being the kind man he was, did not suspect anything.
When Hassan's attention was distracted for a moment, one of his enemies slipped the poison into his drink. The feast was over by about eleven that night. After the guests had all gone home, Hassan sat with his family in the hall of their home and discussed the highlights of the day. While this was going on, Hassan suddenly clutched his stomach and screamed in pain. His wife and children rushed to his side and asked him what was wrong. The poison however was a potent one, and within seconds Hassan was bent double, sprawled on the floor and screaming even louder. As his family watched in anguish, not knowing what to do, Hassan started vomiting blood. He was however a smart individual and quickly realised that he had been poisoned by something that the village medicine man or even the doctors could not deal with. While still writhing in pain, he commanded his wife and child to immediately go into their respective rooms and lock the doors. My house help too ran into a room together with her sisters and locked the door. What she heard next, she told me, she would not forget for the rest of her life.
Her father, while still screaming, was sort of calling someone at the same time. He said things like, ' Come now, I need you in a hurry! Don't delay.' He said this about four or five times. Then there was silence. What my house help heard next was a slopping sound on the wooden floor of the hall. She opened the door slightly and peeped out into the hall. She nearly fell back in terror and surprise at what she saw. Walking about the hall was the biggest tiger she had ever seen. Its loose stomach folds were brushing against the wooden floor causing the slopping sound. It circled her father, who was now lying prone on the floor with his shirt removed. After circling him several times, it proceeded to lick his stomach. This went on for about ten minutes. The tiger then circled Hassan again several more times and then just disappeared. His wife and children waited for another half an hour before they emerged from their rooms. When they surrounded Hassan and looked eagerly at him, they knew the danger was over as he smiled weakly at them and asked for some water.
The tiger was most likely the guardian spirit of the family, who chose to appear as a tiger in order to save Hassan from certain death.
