Man-faced Eagle

Typical Oil Palm plantation in Westerm Malaysia.This is a true story that occurred in an Oil Palm plantation in Malaysia that I was working in about four years ago.

Zainal was a recorder in the plantation. The duties of a recorder were to enumerate the number of oil palm fruit bunches harvested every day by the harvesters, ensure that the harvesters harvest only ripe bunches, count the number of bags of loose fruit collected and ensure that no loose fruits were left uncollected under the palms. In order to ensure that the loose fruit pickers had completely collected all of the loose fruits, Zainal often had to check under the palms that were harvested several days before. This would mean that he would be walking up and down the rows of oil palm trees all alone carrying out this duty, as the harvesters and loose fruit pickers would have moved to other areas of the plantation. Since he would be isolated from others when involved in this duty, a recorder normally carried a machete to protect himself from wild animals like monkeys, wild pigs, bears and leopard cats.

Zainal was one day involved in the checking for loose fruit collection in an old oil palm field. The trees here were about forty feet tall, in contrast to the much shorter palms in younger fields. As he was walking down a row, he saw in one of the adjacent rows, what appeared to be a large bird swooping from one palm to another. As oil palms are planted in tight rows in oil palm plantations, large birds like eagles do not have the space for free flight through the canopy. They rather tend to move from palm to palm in a sort of parabola curve. Zainal was puzzled when he saw this as there were no white eagles in Malaysia. He could see the bird on its new perch, and wanted to have a closer look at it. Very slowly, he circled round the bird, moving from palm to palm, until he could see the face of the eagle.

What he saw sent a shudder down his spine. The eagle had the face of a man! The face was snow white just like feathers of the bird, but it had a hooked nose, deep set human eyes, a thin mouth and pointed chin. When Zainal caught sight of the bird's face, it was looking away, but it soon turned its face to where he was hiding behind a palm, and their eyes met for an instance. Zainal froze as his eyes met the cold hard stare of the bird. The bird however took flight the next instant - looping from palm to palm very rapidly until it was out of sight.

Zainal reported this to a staff, who subsequently reported the matter to me. I dismissed this as sheer imagination and told them to get on with their work. That evening, Zainal reported the matter to his folks, who in turn consulted some old wise men in the village about the matter. An old man told them that this sort of bird had been seen before. He warned them that a person coming face to face with such a bird would normally go blind.

A few days after this incident, Zainal was struck in the left eye by a loose fruit in a freak accident. He almost lost this eye, but recovered completely after three months.

I became intrigued by all this and wanted to check if there was any record in any paranormal book about eagles with human faces. After a long search, I found one listing which matched this phenomenon somewhat. This was from Japan. It stated that there is a bird like creature with the face of a human that lives high up in trees in some parts of Japan. The creature it seems is an expert swordsman, and warriors of yore who were fortunate enough, could approach this creature in order to learn swordsmanship from it.
