MOSCOW (AFP) - A French-made Corot spacecraft designed to search out planets has blasted off on a Russian rocket from the Baikonur cosmodrome in Kazakhstan, Russia's space agency said.
The satellite successfully left on its mission aboard a Soyuz 2-1B rocket, agency spokesman Igor Panarin told AFP Wednesday.
The Corot is the latest step in a quest to find planets orbiting other stars, with the ultimate goal being any discovery of another planet fit for human habitation.
Bearing a 30-centimetre (12-inch) telescope and two cameras, Corot is designed to hunt for "rocky" planets -- the first requirement, along with water in its liquid state and a moderate temperature, for human life.
