"Our talks cover development, production and sales of batteries for use in automobiles," Wada said. "But we are not in a position to elaborate further on the project as talks are still under way."
The Nihon Keizai Shimbun said Thursday that Japan's second-largest automaker and the electronics and computer giant will set up a joint venture next year with an aim of beginning mass production of the batteries by 2010.
By joining forces, they hope to catch up with the rival team of Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. and Toyota Motor Corp., the business daily said, citing unnamed sources.
Through their venture, Nissan and NEC plan to develop and commercialize small but high-capacity lithium ion batteries, which are projected to become the dominant technology for fuel-efficient vehicles in the future, it said.
The two partners plan to build a factory by 2010 and sell the batteries to outside firms as well. Investment in the new plant is expected to exceed 10 billion yen (84.4 million dollars), it said.
Because the joint venture will place considerable weight on sales to outside firms, Nissan's stake in the venture will likely be less than 50 percent, it added.
Nissan said earlier this month that it aimed to develop its own hybrid and other "green" cars as part of a push to catch up with Japanese rivals such as Toyota and Honda that have cashed in on energy-saving and cleaner motoring.
